On 1 January 2019 Romania assumed the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Each country in the European Union alternately chairs the Council of the European Union for a period of six months.

After Bulgaria, Austria served this function from 1 July to 31 December 2018 and passed to Romania for the first half of 2019.
